Chartered Counselling Psychologist

Hello, I'm Karen Derber

Providing a safe, compassionate and confidential space to help you to understand your difficulties and using evidence-based therapies to support you in building a more fulfilling life.

My journey in psychology spans over 40 years and is deeply personal. My own lived experience with emotional challenges fueled a desire to understand what true psychological health looks like.

This personal insight, combined with decades of professional training, shapes my practice: a blend of scientific rigour and genuine human compassion. My core belief is simple yet profound: within a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, meaningful and lasting change is not just possible—it’s achievable.

My Qualifications & Professional Standing

I practice according to the strict ethical codes of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC). My credentials reflect a lifelong commitment to the highest standards of care.

  • Chartered Counselling Psychologist (BPS, 2005)
  • Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS)
  • M.Sc. in Counselling Psychology
  • Post-Graduate Advanced Diploma in Counselling and Therapy
  • B.A. (Hons.) in Social Psychology
  • Theories and Skills in Supervision (Salomons Institute for Applied Psychology, 2007).

My Experience & Specialisms

Since 1996, I have supported adults from diverse backgrounds in both private practice and the NHS. My career includes specialised roles that inform my understanding of complex challenges.

  • Counselling Psychologist for Long-term Physical Health Conditions & Medically Unexplained Symptoms at Conquest Hospital, Hastings (2006-2013).
  • Experience within Chronic Pain Services at Eastbourne District General Hospital.
  • Specialist placement in a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Service in Brighton and Hove.

My Therapeutic Philosophy

While evidence-based technique is crucial, I believe the heart of effective therapy is the relationship itself. Good therapy cannot be reduced to a manual; it requires the human qualities of insight, empathy, warmth, and creativity. I chose to become a Counselling Psychologist because I see the therapeutic relationship as the most transformative agent for change—a view strongly supported by research. It is in the safety of this genuine connection that new understandings are forged and healing begins.

What My Patients Say

From time to time I think of you, because you have been so instrumental and patient from the very start of my healing journey….

Sally

Who sought help with an abusive coercive controlling relationship

Our conversations have transformed my understanding of myself and I am so grateful to have my life back.

Julie

Who sought help with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

I cannot thank you enough for your understanding and the way that you listened to me. I barely recognise that desperate person I used to be, when I met you I had no sense of any future, now I know I will be ok.
