Ecopsychology
This new approach advocates therapy to take place in an outdoor space.
Research in this field focusses on the therapeutically enhancing effect of engaging in the process of therapy whilst being in the natural world.
In the Summer months, May to August and with due regard to the weather, counselling or longer term psychotherapy can be in a garden setting, set within 7 acres in East Sussex bordered by forests, but easily accessible by road. Traditionally therapy has been conducted within four walls and with therapist and client seated, There are good therapeutic rationales for such a setting. However, by engaging in talking to a therapist whilst being mindful of the external context of the natural world, brings a new sense of connection with the other than human world, as well as other humans. Often new and different experiences of safety and stability arise within the individual’s sense of self, at the same time as a deepened and clearer sense of connection with the external world of nature and of other individuals.
